I woke up this morning and of course, as per usual…I decided to check my phone. One of the posts on my feed by Link Up TV (One of the main sources for everything UK Rap Music) shared a snippet from a podcast that was diving deep on the topic of UK female rap music.
More specifically, they were exploring the reasons why female rap artists in the UK simply do not have as many hits in comparison to their male counterparts, and that got me thinking.
Now according to the some of the opinions that were expressed in this snippet, UK female rap artists are still somewhat seeking validation in the field of barring, or in other words, seeking recognition for their capability to rap just as well as any male rapper in present as well as past history.
Another thought that was expressed also highlighted that perhaps as a result of this, UK female rap artists are focused more so on creating lyrically heavy hitting tracks as opposed to releasing records that are made more so to capture the ears of a mass audience.
Thinking about it myself I’m not sure that there is much I can say that I can back up with concrete evidence, but I do wonder if marketing might have something to do with it.
Hip Hop historically has always been male dominated pretty much since its inception, but more specifically in marketing aspects, hip hop has always been packaged and sold to the masses with a series of specific formulas that always seem to adhere more so to the male rappers as opposed to female ones.
With that being said do female rappers simply need to focus less on asserting their lyrical presence, or does someone need to reformulate the ways in which female rappers are marketed?
