So the other day I was out on an odd job that requires me to use my dated mathematics. I couldn’t believe how inexperienced I was with money.
Anyway the job requires me to do something very simple: deliver a product, exchange that product for cash, return the correct change and carry along my merrily day.
I ended up giving the dude more money than what I was supposed to, and he knew it even before he took the cash from my hands. As a matter of fact, he took the opportunity that I unknowingly presented him by simply saying “Keep the change”, knowing full and well that I didn’t have my numbers right. There I was thinking he was doing me a favour. What a sly fox, and a poor excuse for a human being if I’ve ever seen one.
The truth as I paint it though is that deep down he wasn’t really at fault. As a person whose grown up most likely from a principle of kill or be killed and any unprepared fool is fair game, he probably felt he was right in taking advantage of me. I messed up for not being prepared for the occasion where somebody might screw me over because I haven’t accepted that the world won’t go easy on me just because I’m trying to be a good person.
The main point I’ve taken away from it anyway is…why did that situation happen for me? I’ve learned that situations like that shouldn’t be taken so personally. Dude had nothing against me, but I was a fool, and he took advantage of me. He would have taken advantage of an elderly blind woman in a church, or a young boy who lives on a wheelchair.
I’ve learned that I should always have my wits about me. If people need something from me and they’re willing to trick me out of it, it won’t matter whether I’m a good person or not. Everything is fair game in their eyes, and I just need to build the right attitude to deal with it better next time around.
