In The Love I Have For The Artform

Writer's picture: Made EzeMade Eze

I’ve got roughly about 30 finished songs scattered across 3 exercise books in my office somewhere, and I never realised how much I used to write for the simple fact that I just loved rap as an artform. I recently learned that the word amateur comes from a greek word I can’t spell or pronounce that actually means lover or lover of.

This hit me pretty deep because it has changed the way I look at people who engage in hobbies or interests. It turns out that they’re not doing it because they’re proficient or because they believe they are, it turns out that they engage in their interests because they simply love to do so, and they’re not invested into whether they will one day become exceptional or not.

Their expertise or exceptionalism is something that both eventually and inevitably occurs as a result of the amount of time people invest into their hobbies or interests. Sometimes exceptionalism is there as a result of natural talent, but this is rarely the case.

Flicking through my exercise books I found this one song that I just found myself performing over and over again in my bedroom. It’s almost as though I forgot how happy I used to be writing it down and made me realise that excellence is something that will come in due time, but for now I should really learn how to be in love with the music I create.

Perfection saps all the fun and the joy out of it, and I don’t really need impress anybody including myself when the simple fact of the matter is that I love making rap music.
