Music Can Kill You

Writer's picture: Made EzeMade Eze

On my first day out from prison my probation officer said something to me that I never really wanted to admit was right. He told me that as an artist, because Im naturally open to the extreme and lows expression, I am more sensitive than the average person and therefore more vulnerable.

Whether it be due to nature or the mere choice of diving deep into certain subject matters it makes no difference. Normal people are not susceptible to this kind of suffering because they simple choose not to look behind the curtain, and as the famous saying goes: what you don’t know can’t hurt you.

There’s no tragedy or fairy tale for people who just choose to get on and live their lives. Such people do not see any deep meaning or grandiose revelation behind the things that do or don’t happen in their life. If a normal person falls on the ground on their way to fetch a bus only to miss it, they get up, walk to the bus stop and await the next one with barely a second thought given to the event. They don’t then decide to write a song about it.

I want to try and arrive graciously to the point that I’ve been trying to build through this analogy, and I guess that point is  as an artist, whether be due to nature or the choices that have made you who you are, music can and will kill you if you’re not careful. We go to places emotionally normal people simply don’t go to on a daily basis, and that makes us not only sensitive, but vulnerable. You’d think that surely things should logically be the other way around but that is simply not the case.

I want to emphasise that because we are this more sensitive and more vulnerable aversion of the human species, when we do invest ourself into the business aspect of our music career, we are going to be working with people that are going to be very indifferent to our outcome. Yes our lives may be some sort of colourfully dark and twisted fairy tale, but to them we will be just another human being that is no more or less special than the being to the left or right of us. This is gonna be important for us to remember because it will enable us to cooperate with these people in a way that won’t make life difficult for us.

Trust me, because we care about making it big, and making it big is an outcome that has some sort of deeper meaning, when things don’t go our way it’s gonna hurt us emotionally. We need to prepare for that as we venture further towards our dreams to become superstars.
