The Gift Of Being Poor

Writer's picture: Made EzeMade Eze

I’m trying to build a positive picture around my current situation, circumstance and surrounding because comparison for the most part has always been the thief of joy.

There’s some things in life that I guess we never got the chance to choose, and I think two of those things relevant to what I’m thinking about right now are our parents and the class that we’re born into.

Despite the fact we were never alive to decide what class and what family we were gonna be born into, someone else’s choices have shaped the quality of our lives, and because of this relationship we have built an opinion based on those choices.

The truth is we can’t change what class and what family we’ve been born into, but we can and will have an influence over every decision that we decide to make after those facts.

Over the course of my years coming to terms with my identity, I’ve decided to evolve my opinion in a way that allows me to appreciate the things that I do have rather than focusing on the things I don’t.

Observing or learning about those whom have been born into wealthier and more renowned families than my own have given me a clear picture of the things they lack, and often at times I find that the things they lack are the things that I have in abundance. Purpose and meaning are two of such things.

This isint a way of me saying that being poor is cool because it isint, but if there’s one thing that I can say and often find consoling when I hear myself saying it is that hardships form the best friendships. Suffering brings a different feel to the meanings we attach to our lives, and if we can learn how to value that then we’ll find it’s not so bad not to be born with the best of circumstances.
