Thursday the 8th of August 2024 and the title of today's reflection is going to be the stories we tell. Now, I'm not entirely certain that this is completely exclusive to artists, however I do feel that this is something that is very acute and very poignant in the field that I'm in. And the
stories that we tell ourselves, which I'm sure I've spoken about to a certain degree in another form or fashion on my blog, but the stories that we tell ourselves often have a way of revealing a lot about who we are. the message that we effectively put out
through the stories that we tell ourselves really kind of like do fall into two categories. Did this happen to us or did this happen for us? And I guess to a certain way, you know, in a certain way, we can jumble between those two kind of like possibilities
and really begin to flesh out kind of like a realization of who we actually are. Now, for some reason, like, you know, kind of like one of the things that motivated me to even think through this reflection in the first place is that, you know, kind of like when it comes to artists,
like, you know, we all effectively have a role to play in this society. Yes, there are artists, however, there are also doctors, lawyers, engineers, you know, field workers. There are people that contribute to our society in a way that I guess we could never ever do ourselves
because we're too selfish to do so. Jobs that pay very, very little and yet demand so much. And because of those roles that are effectively worked, it is through that position that we are able to have clean water running through our pipes and gas running through our buildings and stuff like that. And yet, when it comes to the stories that we tell ourselves as artists, we almost expect the floor to be kind of like
paved down for us in the first place. We expect everything to be absolutely there in tip-top shape. If the engineer couldn't be bothered to pick up our phone call today, then it means that the engineer is an idiot. And then, you know, if the producer decided to kind of like, you know, not to trim, like, you know, a certain amount of seconds off of an instrumental that you're working on, or maybe the producer didn't add that reverb effect that you were looking for, or maybe your videographer decided, you know, forgot that he had double booked an appointment. Like the stories that we tell ourselves and, you know, kind of like say a lot about us. And often at times, when I do listen to artists lament,
when I listen to them complain, I tend to find that there is a very great, kind of like a unconscious sense of entitlement that I find incredibly dangerous.
